8 Tips To Bond With Your Dog for NationalTrain Your Dog Month!

Congratulations on becoming a dog owner, whether you got a new puppy for the holidays or decided to start the New Year with a new canine companion! Whatever breed of dog you have, it is critical to foster a healthy relationship with them through dog training. Fortunately, January is National Train Your Dog Month, and there's no better time to get your dog started on the right track.

Most people include puppy potty and general house training on their to-do list, but there’s so much more.

You can strengthen your pet-owner bond and even help ensure your pet's safety in the future by setting boundaries and providing useful training for your dog now. Keep reading to know more.

What does National Train Your Dog Month Mean?

Your dog is naturally loyal, loving, and your best friend; these qualities do not require training. Dogs only need basic obedience training. Training your dog on the fundamentals can be a daunting task. However, getting the right advice at the right time will make things much easier.

What about the start of the year? This month is dedicated to dog training and reaping the benefits of that training. This month, dog owners, trainers, and experts will gather to celebrate their mutual love of canines.

This is why The Association of Professional Dog Trainers established January as National Train Your Dog Month in 2010. (APDT). The month serves as a campaign to raise awareness about the importance of dog training and how it benefits pets and their owners worldwide.

According to the APDT, January was chosen for this campaign because it has historically been one of the most popular times for people to adopt a new puppy or dog.

8 Puppy Training Advice:

In honor of National Train Your Dog Month, here are eight tips for teaching your dog what's

acceptable and what's not.

Build a "den" for your puppy.

Dogs are den animals. As a result, the dog must have a haven where it can go when stressed or anxious.

A crate can be an ideal tool to house train your pet or to keep canines suffering from separation anxiety from destroying the house while you run a few errands.

Making this space will also allow you to have your dog take a break when needed from daily excitements effectively.

Timing is everything.

Small training doses work best; try 2 to 5 minutes to begin. Training sessions that are too long may be negative to your dog or cause frustration or overstimulation. Dogs live in the present! Reward things you want to encourage immediately so your dog can connect the behavior and the response.

Don't Use Aggression on your puppy.

Aggression training techniques were once used as a tool, but studies now show they are

ineffective and even harmful.

Punishments based on aggressive behavior are dangerous because they can instill fear, and fear is a major cause of aggression and shyness. You want to connect with them rather than scare them away. The best tool for learning is motivation and great dog trainers will help you find the right way to motivate and incentivize the behaviors you are looking for and ending the unwanted ones.

Pay attention to your dog.

Above all, be aware of your dog's body language. During training sessions, watch for signs of

frustration or discomfort. Instead of requiring perfection, reward small steps and provide time for active play following training. Dogs are more willing to train again if they know it will be followed by playtime!

Don't participate in all negative puppy behavior.

Remember how puppy training takes a lot of patience? This is the reason.

Misbehaving puppies are constantly vying for your attention, so when bad behavior, such as

begging for food, occurs, it is critical to remain calm and avoid engaging with them.

We recommend preparing your puppy for success by telling the begging dog to go to his place, lie down, and then reward him with a treat.

Maintain a consistent training schedule for your dog.

Many dog owners make the mistake of letting training lapse and fall by the wayside as they adjust to life with their new dog. There is no better way to start a new year than by getting a jump start on your training by bringing your dog. This is especially true when the puppy responds to commands more readily and appears to be catching on.

This is a critical period in which consistency (or lack thereof) can make or break everything you've created with your pet.

Set good boundaries from the beginning and be consistent. Do not allow bad habits to form by introducing early training and supervision.

Make dog training a habit in your pet's life.

Consider a skill you learned as a child but haven't used in years. If you tried it now, you might be a little rusty. Dog training is similar in that it must be practiced regularly for your pet to remain alert and responsive. To keep Fido sharp, make commands a regular part of his daily routine (for example, saying "sit" and "stay" at meal times).

Benefits Of Training Your Dog!

Check out some of the reasons training your dog is essential;

  • It aids in the elimination of behavioral issues such as digging, barking, and jumping on visitors.

  • It increases its security. If your pet has received obedience training, it may come in handy in emergencies. For example, when it loses its leash, it will respond to your calls to return. Obedience will also assist in keeping the dog from eating or touching anything that will harm it.

  • Training helps to create a stronger bond between the dog and its owner. Dogs and owners develop mutual respect and trust through dog training classes. As a result, they eventually form a lasting relationship.

  • Dog training enables owners to spend more time with their pets. Training your dog should not be viewed as a chore; rather, it should be viewed as a fun way to interact with your dog.
