  • What is the difference between a service dog and an emotional support animal (ESA)?
A service dog is trained to perform specific tasks that are related to their handler's disability. These tasks can be life-changing for disabled individuals, allowing them to better function in society. An ESA, on the other hand, is there to provide companionship and emotional support at home. An ESA does not need to be trained to perform tasks and are not be allowed to accompany its handler in public places that don't allow pets. To be able to determine what the best fit for your health needs talk to your doctor and an ESA or SD/PSD.

  • What tasks do you train for a psychiatric service dog?
At Morgan's Pawsitive Pup Training, we train psychiatric service dogs to perform a variety of tasks that help individuals with mental health conditions live more independent and fulfilling lives. Some of the most common tasks that we train include: Alerting: The dog can be trained to alert the handler to an impending panic attack, anxiety episode, or other symptoms of their mental illness. This can give the handler time to take steps to manage their symptoms, such as taking medication or finding a quiet place to relax. Providing deep pressure therapy (DPT): DPT is a calming technique that involves applying firm, steady pressure to the body. The dog can be trained to lie on the handler's lap or chest during a panic attack or other stressful situation. The pressure from the dog's body can help to regulate the handler's breathing and heart rate, and can also provide a sense of comfort and security. Grounding: The dog can be trained to help the handler stay focused and present in the moment. This can be helpful for people who experience dissociation or depersonalization. The dog can do this by providing tactile stimulation, such as licking the handler's face or hand, or by simply being present and providing companionship. Retrieving items: The dog can be trained to retrieve items that the handler may need during a panic attack or other episode, such as medication, a phone, or a water bottle. This can help the handler to stay safe and comfortable during a difficult time. Providing physical barriers: The dog can be trained to stand between the handler and a triggering stimulus, such as a crowd or a loud noise. This can help to reduce the handler's anxiety and make them feel more safe and secure. Distracting: The dog can be trained to provide a distraction for the handler during a panic attack or other difficult situation. This can be done by playing fetch, doing tricks, or simply sitting quietly next to the handler. These are just a few of the many tasks that a psychiatric service dog can be trained to perform. The specific tasks that are trained will vary depending on the individual's needs and the dog's abilities. It is important to note that psychiatric service dogs are not therapy dogs. Therapy dogs are trained to provide comfort and support to people in a variety of settings, such as hospitals, schools, and nursing homes. Psychiatric service dogs, on the other hand, are trained to perform specific tasks that help individuals with mental health conditions live more independently. If you are considering getting a psychiatric service dog, it is important to work with a reputable trainer who is experienced in training these types of dogs. The trainer should be able to assess your needs and help you choose a dog that is a good fit for you.
